'No need' for security ops in Poso
National News - May 31, 2006

JAKARTA: There is no need to extend the security operation in the conflict-prone province of Central Sulawesi, its governor said Tuesday after meeting Vice President Jusuf Kalla.
HB Paliudju said calm had returned to the province, particularly in the two most violence-prone towns of Palu and Poso.
The office of chief security minister Widodo Adisucipto launched a special security operation in the province earlier this year after a series of violent attacks there.
The operation was aimed at improving cooperation between the province's police and military to end the violence in the area.
Warring elements of the police and military personnel are believed to have been involved in the violence.
Paliudju said while the main program could end, the joint Sintuwu-Maroso operations by the police and military to maintain stability in the area since the 2000 sectarian conflict remained necessary.
"The Sintuwu Maroso operations represent a symbol of togetherness for the people there. They are still important," he said. --JP
